Is It Normal to Refill AC Gas Every Year? Signs of a Refrigerant Leak
We hear this a lot in Rawalpindi and Islamabad every summer: “My AC needs gas every year, is that just normal?” It isn’t. Refrigerant gas is sealed in a closed loop and, barring a leak, an AC should run for years without needing a top-up.
Signs You Have a Refrigerant Leak
- AC cools well for a few weeks or months after a gas refill, then gradually gets weaker again
- Ice or frost forming on the outdoor unit’s pipes or indoor coil
- A hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor or outdoor unit
- Noticeably longer run times to reach the same temperature as before
Why Just Refilling Doesn’t Fix It
Refilling gas without finding and sealing the leak is a short-term patch. The same leak point keeps releasing refrigerant, so you end up paying for a refill every year while your AC runs inefficiently in between, and the compressor wears out faster from running low on gas.
What a Proper Repair Looks Like
A proper fix locates the leak point, usually at a joint, valve, or a corroded section of coil, seals or replaces it, then recharges the system to the correct pressure for your unit and ambient temperature. This is worth doing once rather than topping up every year.
Quick Answer
How often should a healthy AC need a gas refill?
Essentially never, unless there has been physical damage to the lines. If you are refilling annually, there is a leak worth finding and fixing properly.
