Washing Machine Not Draining or Spinning? Try This First

A washing machine that won’t spin or won’t drain is one of the most common calls we get, and a few of the causes are things you can check yourself before booking a technician.

Machine Not Draining

Blocked drain filter or hose

Most front-load machines have a small drain filter, often behind a panel at the bottom front, that traps lint, coins, and debris. A blocked filter is the most common cause of standing water and is usually a quick fix.

Kinked or blocked drain hose

Check that the hose running to your drain or sink isn’t bent or pinched, especially if the machine was recently moved.

Faulty drain pump

If the filter and hose are clear but water still isn’t draining, the drain pump itself may have failed and needs replacement.

Machine Not Spinning or Spinning Weakly

Overloading

Too many clothes in one load can prevent the drum from spinning properly. Try a smaller, more balanced load.

Unbalanced load

Heavy items like a single blanket can throw off the balance sensor and stop the spin cycle. Redistributing the load often solves this instantly.

Worn motor belt or carbon brushes

On top-load machines especially, a worn belt or brush set is a common reason for weak or no spin, and is a straightforward repair.

Quick Answers

Can I fix a draining washing machine myself?

Checking and clearing the drain filter is safe to do yourself in most machines. If that doesn’t solve it, the pump or hose likely needs a technician.
