Fridge Freezer Is Cold But the Fridge Section Isn’t? Here’s Why

This is one of the most common calls we get: the freezer is working perfectly, ice is forming, but the fridge section stays warm. It feels confusing because the compressor is clearly running, so people assume the whole unit is failing. In most cases it isn’t.

Why This Happens

In most fridge-freezer combos, one compressor and evaporator cool the freezer, and cold air is then pushed into the fridge section through a vent or duct. If that airflow path is blocked, the fridge stays warm even though the freezer is ice-cold.

  • Blocked air vent between freezer and fridge, often from food packets pushed against it
  • A faulty air damper, the small flap controlling how much cold air enters the fridge
  • Evaporator fan not spinning, so cold air isn’t being circulated at all
  • Evaporator coil covered in frost or ice, blocking airflow

What You Can Check Before Calling

Open the fridge and listen near the back wall or top vent, you should feel or hear a faint airflow. If you hear nothing, the fan or damper is the likely cause. Also check that nothing inside the fridge is pressed against the rear vent panel, since this is the single most common and easiest fix.

When to Call a Technician

If clearing the vent doesn’t help within a few hours, the fan motor or damper likely needs replacing. This is a straightforward repair and far cheaper than replacing the fridge. We diagnose it on the spot and only replace the part that is actually faulty.

Quick Answer

Does this mean my compressor is dying?

No. If the freezer is still getting cold, the compressor is working. This fault is almost always in the airflow path between the two compartments.

We repair fridges of all major brands across Rawalpindi and Islamabad, usually the same day. See more in our FAQ hub.
